Govt Degree College Kargil organized International Women’s Day under the themes “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress” and #inspireinclusion. This year, the event was organised with the aim of celebrating the female student achievers of the college. On 8th March, International Women’s Day marks a global day to celebrate womanhood in socioeconomic, cultural and political achievements. The event was graced by Sh. Imteaz Kacho (JKAS), Additional Secretary Higher Education Department UT Ladakh as the Chief Guest. While Ms. Khusbu Joshi, Director and Founder of Shoqpa Foundation remained as the guest speaker. The programme commenced with a welcome note by Prof. Razia Parveen (Asstt Professor Boatny). Faiza Naaz, student of 6th semester, shared her views on the observance of International Women’s Day. This was followed by a dance performance by the students of the college. Guest speaker of the day Ms. Khusbu highlighted the issues women face in terms of health, menstrual hygiene and women's reproductive rights which are less talked about in the society. She also encouraged students to seek awareness and help regarding menstrual taboos.The talk was followed by the screening of a documentary on “Menstrual Awareness in Kargil” by Shoqpa Foundation. The chief guest of the programme Sh. Imteaz Kacho addressed the students with his valuable views. In his speech, he asserted the accolades of Ladakh especially being brought by women achievers. He applauded the female students of the college for being resilient and determined to take on the course of life with commitment. The female students achievers in various fields like Academics, NCC, NSS, Extra-curricular activities were felicitated with certificate of appreciation by the guests. The event was organised by the Department of English and around 150 students from the college participated in the programme.The programme proceedings were held by Mohammad Tawheed, student of 2nd semester, while the vote of thanks was presented by Khatija Tamanna, student of 4th semester. The programme was followed by high-tea with the guests.

The Department of English, Government Degree College, in collaboration with the District Nodal Officer Mental Health, District Society Kargil, organised an Awareness Program on Substance Abuse, on 28th March 2024, in the seminar hall of the college. The key speakers for the event were Dr Fatima Nissa, Nodal Officer District Mental Health Program, Dr Jalil Wani, Block Medical Kargil and Dr Murtaza Ali, Consultant Neuro-Psychiatrist. The program commenced with the formal welcome of the guests with traditional khataqs, presented by Ms. Parveen Fatima, Head of Department, Department of the English. Dr. Fatima Nissa deliberated on the hazardous causes of substance abuse that has adversely affected the youth in specific and the society at large. She further highlighted the malefic consumption of substances such as cannabis, nicotine, cocaine, opium drug and alcohol amongst others, that has resulted from multiple factors such as parental conflict, poor school climate, poor community bonding and sexual abuse. Dr Jalil Wani presented his talk on the uses and drawback of tobacco. He insisted on strong community bonding and parental assistance in order to mitigate tobacco consumption amongst youth. He also emphasized on the collective responsibility of the community to bring awareness and fight the evils of substance abuse. Dr Murtaza Ali, extensively spoke about the physical, psychological and social dependency of drugs. Some of them being peer pressure, influence of media, to relive stress, to cope with past emotional and physical trauma and familial disputes. He further highlighted the consequences of drug use in the society that results into criminal acts such as drug possession, drug trafficking, theft, robbery and murder. The talk stint was followed by an interactive session with the students. Dr Azra Khatoon, Assistant Professor, Department of English moderated the program and the vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Taira Bano, Assistant Professor Department of English. Media Coverage of the event was done by Ms. Archo Fatima Nissa, Assistant Professor, Department of English. A total of 150 students participated in the program. Refreshment was served at the end of the program, followed by the group photo session with the speakers.

The Department of English, GDC Kargil conducted a ‘Sensitisation Programme’ on Vigilance Awareness Week on 2nd November 2023.. The event was moderated by Ms. Praveen Fatima, Assistant Professor, Department of English. A talk was delivered by Dr. Azra Khatoon, Assistant Professor, Department of English, on the imperative features of VAW. The discussion encompassed the malaises of corruption, that impair the political, social, economic and educational health of a community. She highlighted the notion around the collective responsibility of the youth, stakeholders and members of civil society, to make the society corruption free. The talk was followed by an interaction with the students. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, presented by Taira Bano, Assistant Professor, Department of English, GDC Kargil.

A discussion session was organized by the Department of English on 6th July 2022 on the theme, 'Elements of Fictional Writing.' The key speaker for the event was Mr. Lhundup Gyalpo, author of several fictional books, including 'Betty's Butter Tea: Stories from Ladakh.' The guest speaker highlighted some imperative features and challenges of fictional writing in a Ladakhi milieu. He spoke at length about his journey from IIT to the writing world. The talk was followed by Q/A and sessions. The program was attended by 150 students. The moderator for the program was Ms. Archo Fatima Nissa, and the vote of the thanks was presented by Dr. Azra Khatoon, Assistant Professors, Department of English.

GDC Kargil celebrates annual plantation Drive .The plantation Drive was performed under the Star college scheme of the college which is a DBT funded project for the institute.The college this year aimed to plant 50+ trees under the leadership of worthy Principal Dr Amina Qari.Various plant species of plants like Salix,Poplar,apricot etc were planted.

The GDC, Kargil was honored to host a distinguished guest, Mr. Byju Kiran from Kerala who is the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) representative of Bisleri International. He gave a detailed presentation on history of plastic from discovery till present date plastic scenario all over the world. Also, talked about adverse health effects of microplastics on health, ecosystems, etc and explained in detail about different types of plastic and the massive recycling initiatives undertaken by bisleri international in all over India and especially in Ladakh.

Successful Conduct of Engineering/Architecture physical spot round Counseling by Higher Education Department, UT Ladakh at Govt Degree College,Kargil and EJM College leh Leh, August 11: The Higher Education Department of Union Territory of Ladakh successfully concluded the Engineering/Architecture physical spot round counseling at GDC Kargil and EJM college Leh. Rizwan Ali (Nodal Officer),Assistant Professor Physics and Dr Rinchen Tundup (Nodal officer) Assistant Professor Mathematics conducted the counseling process at GDC Kargil and Amjad Ali Assistant Professor Mathematics conducted the process at EJM College Leh. The physical spot round counseling, organised by the Higher Education Department, witnessed an enthusiastic participation of students from all parts of Ladakh. Out of all the registered candidates a total of 11 candidates have been selected on the basis of their AIR rank of JEE mains 2023.The selected candidates will be issued the provisional admission letter for admission in different reputed institutions/colleges across India. The counsellors provided valuable insights and guidance to the students seeking engineering admissions. This initiative aimed not only to streamline the admission process but also to assist students from far flung areas of Ladakh in making informed decisions about their academic pursuits. The Higher Education Department extends its gratitude to all the participants, parents, and institutions that contributed to the success of this event. The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved are integral to the advancement of education in the region. GDC Kargil holds talk on “Woman in Science” Kargil, March 25, 2023: Department of Physics, Govt. Degree College Kargil under the banner of G20/Y20 today organized a talk titled “Women in Science” to address the challenges faced by women in the field of science and technology. The seminar aimed to encourage more women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. At the outset Rizwan Ali, Assistant Professor Physics welcomed the guest and the speaker of the event, faculty and students. The speaker on the occasion was Zarina Banoo, Assistant professor Physics, Miranda House College, Delhi University. She shared her life experience and challenges during her journey from Chiktan village to Miranda House. She also shared her experience at CERN facility, Switzerland. Banoo explained the criteria to take admission in higher institutions for research purposes. She also talked about various scholarship schemes that a student can take to ease the financial burden. The seminar was insightful and thought-provoking one. It also had an interactive session where various questions were asked by the students. The talk was concluded by HoD Physics, Dr Neyaz Ali and thanked the speaker for sparring her valuable time. He requested the speaker to guide the students and requested to give such fruitful talk in the future. He thanked the principal, faculties and students for making the event successful.
