GDC Kargil celebrates International Week of the Deaf and International Sign language day.
Under the patronship of Principal GDC Kargil Dr Amina Qari GDC Kargil celebrated the International Week of the Deaf and International Sign Language Day on 22 and 23 of September 2022. With the motive to acquaint the faculty and the students with issues and challenges being faced by people with hearing disabilities and to highlight the need to make the society inclusive, a series of progarmmes were organized in the college campus.
On 22 September, the programme commenced with introduction about the special week by Assistant Professor Mohd Javed. Mr. Javed highlighted the plight of deaf people in the society and lack of extra care and love towards them. The session was followed by screening of renowned Oscar winning short film “The Silent Child” which depicts the attitude of society and her parents towards a deaf girl child. Assistant Professor, Archo Fatima Nisa shared her thoughts and described the message presented in the film.
On 23 September, the concluding day, the programme started with briefing by Assistant Professor Parveen Fatima in which she highlighted the importance of International Signs Language Day which was followed by Sign Language Day Pledge by staff and the students. The faculty and students took the pledge to learn and promote use of Indian Sign Language with family and community for making the environment and education accessible foe the deaf and hearing community. A workshop on sign language for beginners through video was held on the occasion in which all the staff members and students were taught basic signs and gestures of communication. The audience also had demo of signs for letters of English Alphabets.
The programme concluded with vote of thanks by in charge principal Dr Javed Iqbal. In his concluding remarks Dr Javed urged upon the societal need to raise the awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf
