One day Botanical tour to Suru valley

As a part of the syllabus prescribed by the University of Ladakh, Department of Botany Govt. Degree College Kargil organizes a one day Botanical tour to Suru valley for the students 5th semester batch 2020 on 1st of July 2022.
The tour was focused on observation and study of morphological characters for the identification of plant species and their classification. The students were explained about the medicinal, economic and ecological importance of the plant diversity of the region and their preservation.
Various plants specimens of species like Podophylum, Leontopodium, Dactylorhiza, Codonopsis, wild Iris, Artemisia, Pedicularis, Ephedra, Funaria, Equisetum, Marchantia etc. have been collected from different localities of the valley for the preparation of herbarium. Instructions were given to the students regarding the proper handling and collection of plant materials without disturbing the ecology and plant diversity of the region including the agriculture fields in the locality. Field guidance about the different divisions of plant kingdom such Fungi, Algae, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms was provided.
A total of 119 students benefitted from the tour. The batch was accompanied and guided by the faculty of the department (Prof. Ashan Ali, Prof. Rinchen Angmo, Dr. Sonam Tamchos and Ms. Tsetan Dolker)
The Department is highly thankful to Dr. Amina Quari, Principal GDC Kargil, Ladakh for providing transport facility for the tour.
